Tsukubama Beach & Upama Beach

Motobu town okinawa japan beaches

Tsukubama Beach

This beach is so secret that it doesn't really have a name. But the locals know it as Tsukubama. The small plot of white sand is easy on the bare feet and is shaped like the crescent moon. Tsukubama is also near the Gesashi estuary and is tucked in a corner of a deep, narrow bay. Take Route 331 to where Highway 14 joins it and veer right. The beach faces the south and gets strong sun, so don't forget the sunscreen.

Upama Beach

This is a forest and estuary called Gesashi. Kayakers enjoy the Gesashi River from Higashi Village. This is Okinawa's mangrove zone. The mangrove forest is a great place to spot the shiomaneki, or fiddler crab. The secret beach is before you get to the Gesashi Communication Site. Pass the cutoff of Highway 14 and look for a little store where you will make a right. The beach is hidden beyond a pineapple farm.
