Ie-jima Island

The island with many names Ie-jima (伊江島), Ie Island is sometimes called Ie-shima in local dialect, Peanut Island because of its shape and peanut crop, and Flower Island because of the abundant chrysanthemum and other flowers grown here.

What every you choose to call this small coral island just off the coast of Motobu town in Northern Okinawa with a population of just over 5,000 you will be happy you came for a visit and sad when you leave. Iejima is only 8.4km from east to west, and 3km from north to south yet there is lots to explore.

The famous “Iejima Tacchu” is a rock that rises 72 meters above the near by sea and resembles a volcano. This easy to climb naturally occurring peak offers 360 degrees views of the whole island and near the by Okinawa main island can be seen from the top.

Gushibaru shell hill is a unique mound that consists of sea shells and is considered a national historic site. Also in Ie Island is a monument dedicated to U.S. journalist Ernie Pyle who died on Ie-jima during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II. The are a few great beaches that are easy to find on the island as well.

Ie-shima should not be written about without mentioning the great snorkeling and SCUBA Diving that takes place just off of the island’s shores. As the Island is formed by upheaved coral you can imagine the the reef surrounding the this peanut shaped island must be abundant with colorful fish and marine life.
