Miyako-Jofu is a traditional cloth of the highest quality originating on Miyakojima Island dating back to the 1600’s. Miyako-jofu is hemp cloth made by weaving flax known as choma, and is characterized by a fine weave and elaborate splashed patterns. This process has been preserved as an important part of Miyakojima culture into present day Okinawa

Along with Echigo Jofu (Prefecture of Niigata) Miyako Jofu is one of the finest textiles in Japan, as such it was designated a traditional craft by the Japanese government in1975. Today Miyako Jofu is produced in the city of Hirara, Shimoji-cho and other locations.
Guided tours of the Weaving Association are available, Mon.-Sat. 9am-6pm
