Shimajiri Pantu, Miyako Island Okinawa Japan

mud face, musk

Miyako-jima Island's Pantu is an ancient ritual held in early September in Hirara City, Shimajiri, and on the last Eel Day in December in Nobaru, Ueno Village (all dates according to the lunar calendar).

In Shimajiri, three visiting gods (Pantu) covered in mud roam around the town, splashing mud on people, houses and cars to help banish evil spirits.

Traditionally people believe that new houses and newborns receive good luck if splashed with the mud. In Nobaru this ritual is known as Satiparai. Similar to Shimajiri but in Nobaru men wear Formosa palm and virgin's bower on their heads and waists to roam the town. Women follow the men with small drums, conch horns, and twigs to provide enthusiastic encouragement.
