Mefuga and Otokoiwa, Kumejima Okinawa Japan

Kumejima, Okinawa has two very interesting places that are celebrated as symbols of fertility. First there is Mefuga, located not too far away from Kumejima Airport this rock can only be translated as “vagina rock” as that is what shape it is in. The rock is said to have powers to help women unable to bare children, people can be seen praying at this spot. Adding to the symbolism of Mefuga is a stream of water that drips from the top of the center of the crevasse. In May each year there are over 10,000 white lilies that bloom around Mefuga.

The other representation of fertility is Otokoiwa (Mt. Garasa), a small island with a large phallus! The Island is located not far off shore from Kumejima’s Kanegusuku port and can be seen easily from Fureai Park.
