Ishigaki Limestone Caves, Okinawa Japan

Inside this amazing natural phenomenon visitors get a chance to see what the Ryukyu Islands are made of. A 600 meter long trail that has been well laid out with steps, hand rails, and lighting into these caves. Would be explores travel into an underground world where the coral that not only surrounds Okinawa’s Islands but is also part of the islands can be seen.

The formation of these limestone caves took over one million years and besides coral they are also composed of sea eggs, univalve shell, polyzoan, foraminifera, bivalve, and lime alga. Similar limestone caves can be found in many different parts of Okinawa but the twists, turns, and low ceilings of the trail that winds through the caves on Ishigakijima makes for a fun adventure. After a busy day of spelunking visitors can take a rest at the restaurant or buy some gifts at the shop near the entrance of the caves.
