Malaria Memorial Stone & Battle of Okinawa Memorial Stone

Both of these memorial stones can be found at the entrance to Banna Park. The Battle of Okinawa Memorial Stone pays respect to the over 250,000 people who lost their lives in Okinawa during some of the most brutal battles in history
The Malaria Memorial Stone remembers the local Yaeyama people who where forced from their homes and into the jungles during the fighting in WWII. Over 3,000 people died from malaria while living in terrible conditions.
Besides respecting and remembering those who perished these stones represent Yaeyama’s, Ishigaki’s, and Japan’s desire for world peace. Each year on the anniversary of the end of The Battle of Okinawa ( June 23rd) a somber memorial service is held at both stones.
From Ishigaki Airport: Approx. 35 min. by car
