Hoshisuna Beach - Iriomote Island Okinawa Japan

“Hoshi” means star in Japanese and if you have ever seen or heard of the star shaped sand on beaches in Okinawa, this is the place that actually has it. This unique natural phenomenon is caused from the death bakyurojipushina a large-sized Foramifera kind of coral. This type of coral lives in the reefs surrounding Iriomote Island and when it dies the small carcasses accumulate on the shores becoming sand.
If you take a trip into the beautifully clear sea it is easy to see the live version of the bakyurojipushina hanging onto alga while snorkeling or SCUBA diving. Hosisuna Beach is fully equipped with showers and toilets on the beach. You’ll also find a campsite, a decent restaurant and snorkelling gear for rent.
