Haemida Beach, Iriomote Island Okinawa Japan

tropical flower world war 2 monument marine sports

The long shore of Haemida beach stretches for over 2km on the southern edge of Iriomote Island. As beautiful as this beach is the water tends to be a bit rough because there is a reef located not far off shore. Swimming here is possible but not allowed in certain areas due to dangerous conditions.

Also located on the eastern edge of the beach are two monuments built in memory for those who died at the end of World War Two. The “Wasurena-Ishi” and “Wasurena-Ishi-no-hi” monuments were erected at Haemida Beach to mourn the loss of many lives lost to malaria in the near by area when resident were forced into the jungles to escape the fighting.
