May - the rainy season - what to expect?

Hi all,

I'd love some information and advice about what to expect if I were to travel to Okinawa and Miyako in May. I will be in Japan all of MAy and really wanted to come to these areas.... only to find out that it is the rainy season there!

I wanted to know what the day's are like in the rainy season. Some countries most of the rain happens at night, some places it rains all day every day and some are half half. But I cant find any detailed information about Okinawa's rainy season.

I wanted to see the sights, and do alot of water sports, snorkelling and swimming. So any description of what the days and weeks entail in May, a comparison of the beggining and end of May will be helpful to me! I have asked another person who could tell me that there are 'squalls' and that swimming and snorkelling is ok in May.... I'm not really familiar with what a 'squall' would look like being from Australia?

Really appreciate any help and advice I will get!

Regards,

Liz

Hello Liz

I'll be happy to answer your question, Liz:-)

May is just a staring of rainy season in Okinawa and also it is a opening month of beaches in Okinawa.
Water temperature might be a bit cold but still nice season to visit Okinawa.
You can definitely do scuba diving and snorkeling for sure if the weather is nice!

Here are some page that explain about Okinawa weather.

What I would suggest is the beggining of May is so called "Golden Week" in Japan and it is a long holiday.
This year will probably around April 29th to May 5th.
I don't recommend to go to Okinawa during Golden Week as it is packed with people and price for accomodations and flights are twice as much!

I would recommend to go after Golden Week.

Hope you have a good time.

Cheers,

Ken
