Near the end of World War Two, the people of the Yaeyama Islands suffered greatly from an outbreak of Malaria when forced from their homes into the jungles causing the death of over 3,000 people. The Yaeyama Peace Memorial Museum is dedicated to educating visitors and local people about the history of this tragic event. On display is a large collection of artifacts and pictures.
