Old House of Uezu, Kumejima, Okinawa Japan

This Japanese National Heritage site was constructed in 1754 to house the Uezu family, descended from the lords of the old Gushikawa Castle. In the more modern Ryukyu kingdom the Uezu family held a social rank of Pechin, a rank similar to Samurai. For generations the Uezu family were the heads of the old Magiri administrative district.

Today the Uezu house’s courtyard and interior are preserved as it was in a time almost forgotten, for tourists to see how life once was on Kumejima Island. The House is a collection of flat wooden houses surrounded by a stone wall and Fukugi trees, a unique bonzai tree. The architecual design is based the wind-water idea of the Ryukyu kingdom
