Toya Port Festival, Yomitan

Know for its Port and large fishing industry it’s no wonder that this is an important festival to the village of Yomitan Okinawa. Held annually on June 20th this festival focuses on the sea, making it an important festival for many local families but like most Okinawa festivals is open for visitors to enjoy watching or even better participate in.

The Yomitan, Toya Port festival consists of various events such as a fish griping contest, tours to the fixed net, jumping into the sea, and of course the Yomitan Haarii (Dragon boat races). The Yomitan Haarii usually starts after lunch. Each year sees over 45 teams participate in the Dragon boat races, fighting to be the champions is all part of the fun in this traditional Okinawa event. Anyone working or living in the Yomitan area can join the Dragon boat races, all you need is 5,000 yen and 12 friends to make a team.

Because it is right on the water visitors to this mid summer Yomitan festival will also have many opportunities to enjoy a variety of seafood dishes prepared with the local cath that the festival is designed to celebrate.
