The Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum, Itoman

The Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum is located in the Okinawa Peace Memorial Park and is the largest war memorial in Okinawa. This war museum gives a sobering overview of the events leading up to the battle of Okinawa, the battle itself and the reconstruction of Okinawa.

The main idea behind the museum is to promote an idea of ever lasting peace to the world. The museum is divided into five separate areas three of which focus on the battle of Okinawa. There are exhibits that cover the history of Okinawa leading up to WWII, the postwar period in which Okinawa was transformed under U.S. military occupation, and an exhibit designed specifically for children to teach them about the importance of human life and to try and cultivate a desire for peace in the future.
