Neo Park, Okinawa Zoo

In the heart of Nago City, down a winding road, is Nature's Environmental Oasis Park Okinawa or NEO Park as it is commonly called. The park features fresh water ponds, tropical flowers and exotic animals. All the animals and fauna are found in replicas of their natural habitats from tropical or subtropical regions all over the world such as the Amazon jungle, African savannah, Southeast Asia and Oceania.

NEO Park is one of two zoos in Okinawa and features more than 500 species of ferns and 3,600 species of plants and cacti covering it covers 251,490 square meters of land. When visitors first enter the park they will be greeted by the foraging birds in Flamingo lake and see many of these same birds flying free throughout the park.

Divided into distinct habitats where the animals can roam as freely as possible, guest to NEO Park can explore the two covered large dome-like cages designed to house over 873 species of birds or the smaller sub habitats the cages are divided into hold many interesting species as well. Lemur Island is another habitat where visitors can purchase bananas and raisins to feed lemurs. Then there is an uncovered environment where larger animals, such as emus, goats and boars live in large pens. Finally there is Tortoise farm designed to be a petting zoo it is safe for children to interact with the animals here.

If you don’t feel like walking the large area of this Northern Okinawa animal sanctuary then the 20 min. train that tours NEO Park is a viable option as it stops sporadically at each habitat. If you really like the park and plan to stay in Okinawa for an extended period of time the annual family passes are available.

Directions: From Naha, take Highway 58 north towards Nago, continue for approximately 1.5 hours. Make a left after the Makeman store and go under the cement arch at the traffic light.
