Nago Museum, Nago City Okinawa

nago museum history of the nago okinawa area

The displays in Nago Museum of rice planting, farming and whale hunting are aimed primarily at showing local youth a disappearing way of life in Okinawa.

The Nago Museum is built on the remains of an old town hall that dates back to the era of the Ryukyu Kingdom(1429-1879). The museum features stuffed livestock including horses and pigs as well as articles used in everyday life from years gone by. Nago Museum has an exhibition about fishing and hunting on the second floor. Okinawa whaling techniques and equipment, used in catching smaller size whales, and performed until the 1970s, can also be seen.
