Nago Castle Ruins

Dating back to the 14th century and former home to the Nago Aji, a type of cheiftan in charge of the Nago area this was once an impressive structure, yet little remains of it in present day Okinawa.

Now the ruins of Nago Castle are mostly known for the 200,000 beautiful cherry blossom trees that come into bloom for a short period in mid to late January every year. This blooming of the celebrated pink flower is one of the earliest in Japan and as such is watched by the whole county as an indicator of the start of Sakura season.

The Nago Castle ruins are part of Nago central park located near the city center and play host to the Nago City spring cherry blossom festival one of the biggest in Okinawa. The ruins stand on top of the hill in the park and over look the clear water of the East China Sea giving some truly breathtaking views.

Directions: From Naha Airport take the Okinawa Expressway, exit at Kyoda the last exit. Continue north toward Nago. Once in Nago, turn right onto Route 84 under the walkway. On your right you will see Orion Brewery. Turn left at the brewery and take an immediate right. The castle will be on the hill to your right.
