The Miyako Islands consist of eight separate islands about 300 km South West of Naha City and the main Okinawa Island. Miyako Island is the largest of the eight and considered the core island among them, as it is the most populated and has the hub city of Hirara.
Because The Miyako Islands are also only 400 Km East of Taiwan the culture, history and heritage of the islands has been influenced by Taiwan, China, Japan, and of course Okinawa as well as other trading partners in the area. This has led to a wonderful unique way of life on these small but unbelievably amazing Ryukyu Islands.
Combined with the culture the Miyako Islands have some of the most beautiful natural sightseeing places and beaches in Asia making them a must visit destination when in Okinawa. Islands like Irabu and Shimoji are well known for their outstanding SCUBA diving sites featuring many underwater limestone caves.
