Minsa Kogei Kan, Ishigaki Island Okinawa Japan

For the Women of Yaeyama there is long tradition of weaving special patterns on Misa textiles as engagement gifs for new husbands. These days the enterprising Women of Ishigaki Island have taken this same technique and applied it to the making of bags, interior accessories, neckties, and many other items that make a perfect gift.

At Minsa Kogei Kan these modern and traditional crafts can be found for sale and on display. On the first floor there is a workshop where visitors can see the process where these goods with hundreds of years of proud history and tradition are produced. On the send floor there are displays and exhibits of documents and machines on dyeing and weaving processes of the past. The best part of this facility is guests have a chance to try their hand at creating some of these traditional Okinawa materials in a hands-on weaving trial program.
