Kumejima Matsuri-Festival

The biggest festival each year on Kumejima Island is the Kumejima Matsuri. Lasting for two days the events and activities surrounding the festival are jam packed with excitement and energy. Eisa dancers get the festival goers moving with their high paced traditional music, while bon dancers pay tribute to their ancestors with their gracious moves. After dark the sky lights up with a spectacular display of fireworks that causes many ohhhh and awwww from the crowd.

One of the main highlights of the Kumejima Festival is the Okinawa Sumo Wrestling competition. In Okinawa Sumo follows rules that are a bit different from regular Japanese Sumo. Competitors wear Judo uniforms and at the Kumejima Matsuri the event takes place on the sandy beach.

Most of the events of this major Kumejima festival take place at Fureai Kouen (Park) that is only a stones through away from Kanegusuku Port and a short drive from Kumejima Airport. Both days the festival opens around 17:00 and goes until 22:00
