Kume-jima Island, Okinawa Japan
Located about 100km West of Naha, Kumejima is the name of both the beautiful town and stunning island the town is located on and is part of Okinawa Japan. With a population of around 9,000 people, Kumejima is a place where much of the old traditional Ryukyu ways still thrive.
Kumejima Island has been blessed with an abundance of natural beauty and is often said to be one of the most attractive Ryukyu Islands. In ancient times Kumejima was often visited by Chinese envoys called "sapposhi" on their way to Shuri Castle on the main Okinawa Island and when the Ryukyu kingdom was dismantled by Japan many of the royal family and nobles relocated to Kumejima Island.
Traditionally Kumejima’s main industry was the cultivation of rice because of the large amount of fresh water found on the island but these days sugar cane and tourism fuel the economy. More people are discovering all that this beautiful Okinawan Island has to offer
Transportation to / from Kumejima Island
Getting to and from Kumejima Island has been made easier in the last few years with more ferry services being added from Okinawa Tomari port and daily flights from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (HND) and Naha Airport (OKA) to Kumejima Airport (UEO). Getting around Kumejima Island is not difficult and there are a few car rental agents to help you on your way......
