Kanegusuku Shishimai

With over 200 years of history and a strong influence from China behind it The Kanegusuku Shishimai Festival is a tradition that is well worth seeing while on Okinawa’s Kumejima Island. Each year during the full moon in September, people come to help drive away evil spirits and watch the Shishimai Dance, a traditional Chinese Lion dance performed with high energy and elegance. There are many other dances and activities that take place around the Kanegusuku Shishimai Festival as well.
