Hiji Falls, Kunigami Village Okinawa

In Northern Okinawa’s Yanbaru Forest you can find one of the most spectacular natural sights in Okinawa, Hiji Falls. Easily accessible down a 1.5 km trail that follows the Hiji River. Along the trail there are many opportunities to experience the wonders of Okinawa’s beautiful nature as you cross narrow bridges and small creeks.

Hiji Falls measures 26 meters (85 feet) in height, making it the highest water fall in Okinawa. Getting to and from the breath taking Hiji Falls is half the fun especially if you are a nature enthusiast. There are over 380 rare species of plants and the possibility of seeing animals like the Okinawa Rail, Akahige bird, Pryer's woodpecker, and other rare animals only found in the Yanbaru Forest.

Many people take advantage of the wonderful nature surrounding Hiji Falls and stay for a few days at the campgrounds located just down stream. Or simply bring a BBQ, tarp and some food and make a day of it. However you decide to enjoy this opportunity please remember to not leave garbage in this little piece of paradise.

Directions: From Naha Airport take Highway 58 north towards Nago. Keep left and continue through Kadena Circle. Near Okuma Resort, there are signs with a picture of Hiji Falls showing you where to go next.
