ChuLa-U Onsen, Chatan Okinawa

Finding an Onsen ( hot spring) in Okinawa is a wonderful thing and this onsen located right on Sunset beach has all of the amenities plus a few wonderful extras. Set up as a swimming pool spa the facility is divided into an outdoor area and an indoor area.

At the co-ed outdoor area swimming suits are needed. Chula-U's swimming pools use natural spring water famous for its health benefits such as regaining energy and relief from joint pain, arthritis, and fatigue. There are 3 pools; a large one, a shallow one for children and another that is not so deep. There are also lounge chairs scattered around the pools and direct access to Sunset beach. During the winter, only the warm pool is open.

Heading to the indoor area you will find the segregated men and women’s bath area. Here everyone gets naked and in Japan it is customary to first shower before bathing, Chula-U provides shampoo and body soap at each shower. After cleaning up you can jump into any of the baths or head back outdoors to the segregated bathing area and soak all your worries away. Also located in the bathing area is a sauna where you can work up a good sweat just in case you haven’t done that enough in Okinawa’s heat .

When you are all pruned and ready to head home don’t forget to offer the tasty treat of the dead skin on your feet to the doctor fish living in the small pool in the entrance way. Simply stick your feet in the water and let them nibble away. It’s an interesting experience that should be tried at least once so you have a good story to tell.

Unfortunately people with tattoos will not be admitted as is quite standard in Japan.

The prices include body soap, shampoo, conditioner, q-tips, razors, tooth brushes, lotion, hair brush, and face wash. Swimming suits and towels are available for rent at the front desk.
