Churaumi Aquarium

One of the most popular tourist destinations in Okinawa the Churaumi Aquarium is one of the largest aquariums in the world and holds some of the most spectacular species of marine life. The Churaumi Aquarium massive tank boasts a record for the largest acrylic glass panel, measuring 8.2 meters by 22.5 meters with a thickness of 60 centimeters.

The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is divided into three main zones. Housed with in the massive tank known as the “Kuroshio (the Japan Current) zone” are some of the only whale sharks to be kept alive in captivity in the world and the very popular giant manta rays along with hundreds of other magnificent fish. Don’t miss the “Coral Reef zone” which aims to teach visitors about reef building coal while displaying some spectacularly colorful fish. Finally there is the “Deep Sea zone” that displays creatures from the depths of the ocean, in these dimly lit rooms guests can witness these rarely seen organisms ability to produce their own light.

A short walk from the Churaumi Aquarium, are four popular and free animal exhibits where visitors to Okinawa Ocean Expo Park can get up close to and learn more about marine life. The Oki-chan Theater, where the dolphin free show is, the Manatee Pool, home to manatees that were a gift from the Mexican government, the Sea Turtle Pool, where visitors can watch sea turtles develop from eggs to maturation, and the Dolphin Lagoon, where visitors can watch and understand the various skills and abilities of dolphins.
