Azela Festival(Tsutsuji Matsuri)

Look!  Aren’t these azaleas beautiful?

“Where are you now? “I am at the Higashi Village Azalea Festival!”

Fifty thousand azaleas are in almost full bloom in Eco Park of Higashi village in northern Okinawa, covering greenery hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

The pink shell azaleas welcome you before the entrance of the park.

This is what they call “Forest of Village People” with full of brightly colored azaleas.

You might want to take a commemorative photo here.

You can view the bridge called “Azalea Bridge” connecting two hills from the first observation deck.

Still you can enjoy more azaleas after passing the bridge!

This walking trail leads you to the second observation deck from the first one.

The left hillside is called “Forest of Youth.”

The festival attracts about 60,000 to 80,000 visitors every year.  Though the fest ended on March 21, you can still view these beautiful azaleas until March 31.

This landscape, which you can see from the second observation deck, will take your

breath away.

“Azalea Bridge” spans two hills, which display beautiful trees of deep and light green.

Under the bridge, an extended trail gives you a refreshing walk in a thick bunch of trees.

Purple azaleas are also fantastic!

Let me give you close-up photos of different colors of azaleas.

After passing the “Azalea Bridge,” you can take a rest at a little stop-off surrounded by

full of azaleas.

When you look down from the stop-off, you see many visitors take pictures of

themselves all surrounded by azaleas of red, pink, purple and white.

If you are forest bathing lover, I would strongly recommend you to go further down from the stop-off.  You feel good breathing in phytoncides emitted by plant and trees.

Admission fee to Eco-Park is ¥300 for adults.

Getting There

Higashi Village is located on the northeast side of Okinawa, well north of Camp Schwab.  Take Highway 329 north to reach the village. An alternative is to take the Expressway to its northern termination at Kyoda, then follow signs to the east side of the island and Higashi Village. It is about 40 minutes by car, with signs clearly marking the way. There are also express buses to Nago City, after which passengers switch to local bus lines 73 or 78 to Taira, Higashi Village.
