Tsunami Warning - Okinawa

 Japan Meterological Agency has issued a warning of a 3 meters tsunami (about 10 ft) or higher along its northern Pacific Coast following the devastating earthquake in Chile.

More than 300 people have been killed after a huge earthquake struck the Chilean coast.

Tsunami warning in Hawaii was lifted earlier.

 

**Evacuate from the seashore immediately to the safe places near the above coasts.
Tsunami attentions are in effect at some of the other coasts now.

 

Earthquake Information in Okinawa

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake hit off Japan's southern coast early Saturday at 5:31am.
Shaking Okinawa and nearby islands like Miyako Island, Yaeyama Islands where a tsunami warning was briefly issued

The Japan Meteorological Agency later lifted the warning within two hours after observing only a small swelling of tide.

The Earliest Cherry Blossoms in Japan

 “The earliest cherry blossoms in Japan!”…with this catch phrase, “The 32nd Mt. Motobu Yaedake Cherry Blossom Festival” started in Motobu Town today.  The festival is held until February 7, 2010.

On the road to the peak of Mt Yeadake, cherry blossom showed strong signs of blossoming, causing many visitors to get their cameras out. 

In most arreas, only 10-20 percent of the cherry blossoms are in bloom, but in some places you can find 70 percent of the cherry blossoms in bloom. 

First Jerk Chicken Restaurant in Okinawa - OTO-NARI

 Ah chicken. Who doesn’t love the tasty little peckers?

Well we didn’t think it was possible but they have managed to make chicken EVEN BETTER.
I’m talking of course about the first Jerked Chicken restaurant in Okinawa. The restaurant “OTO-NARI” opened on the Okiei Street in Naha on Dec 7 and is the first restaurant in Okinawa to sell jerked chicken since…ever.

SHURIJO CASTLE PARK NEW YEAR’S 2010(PART III)

I went to Shurijo Castle Park to see its New Year’s Celebration on January 2.

In the afternoon, traditional Ryukyuan dances were held at Keizuza and Yomotsuza (Shicha-nu-Una).

This ritual is for people to vow their royalty to the King as well as the longevity of the King and the prosperity of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The attendants are the same as those in Part 1.

Shurijo Castle Park New Year’s 2010 (Part I)

I went to Shurijo Castle Park to see the New Year’s Celebration on January 2.

This traditional “New Year’s Ceremony” was originally held early in the morning of New Year’s Day in the Ryukyu Dynasty.  The Ryukyu King, royal princes, aji local chieftains, sanshikan three ministers, the other royal government officials attended this solemn Chinese-style ritual conducted in Chinese language.

The 32nd Mabuni Fire & Bell Observance was solemnly held at the Okinawa Peace Memorial Hall in Mabuni, Itoman City from New Year’s Eve into New Year’s Day to offer prayers to the 230,000 people who died during the Battle of Okinawa.

Okinawa Marathon 2010 Entry Now!!!

 Are you looking for a challenge?  If you want, join one of the winter biggest events in Okinawa, the Okinawa Marathon on March 7, 2010!  

The event has two distance options: 42.195 km (approx.26.4 miles), full marathon and 10 km (approx. 6.25 miles), quarter marathon.  For full marathon, you will enjoy running through Kadena Air Base around 30 km point.  

You can see some interesting characters running the full marathon.

Itoman Peaceful Illumination Festival

 The eleventh annual Itoman Peaceful Illumination Festival is happening in Okinawa on Dec 18, 2009, and lasting until January 3 2010. In case you don’t know what the event is, the Itoman peaceful Illumination festival is an event that was started back in 1999. 130,000 miniature lights are lit to celebrate the end of the Battle of Okinawa, right at the location where the battle ended in Itoman city. 130,000 is the population of Itoman city.  Every night, at 8 o’clock until the 3rd of January, all the lights are turned off and then on once again.

Haneda Airport to be the next popular international airport

Haneda Airport in Tokyo might see major boost in daylight flights. 
According to transport minster Seiji Maehara, Haneda airport is to become a 24-hour hub for international flights with North America and Europe.

Bull Fight in Okinawa

 Ah, good old fashioned bull fights. Nothing releases stress better than sitting around a stadium with thousands of other people, and watching two animals try to ram each other into submission. Good times.
